BOURNEMONTH – During my recent visit to Bournemouth, I had the pleasure of dining at Sambal Tumis, a delightful Malaysian restaurant conveniently located across from the Bournemouth Train Station. Run by the passionate couple, Mr. and Mrs. Prior, this small family-run establishment captures the essence of authentic Malaysian cuisine.
n
The Priors’ vision was to showcase the rich flavors and cultural diversity of Malaysian food, and they have achieved this with flying colors. From their national dish, Nasi Lemak, to the aromatic Nasi Goreng, satay, and laksa, the menu offers a tantalizing array of street food favorites.
n
What sets Sambal Tumis apart is the dedication to cooking with their senses rather than strict measurements. The careful blending of ingredients such as onion, ginger, lemongrass, and garlic is done with a keen eye for consistency and a nose for the perfect aroma. This attention to detail ensures that every dish is cooked to perfection and brimming with authentic flavors.
n
Beyond the exceptional food, the warmth and hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Prior shine through. They prioritize forging connections with their diners, creating an experience that goes beyond simply enjoying a meal. It’s a true celebration of Malaysian hospitality, where guests are entertained with food and conversations.
n
The starters at Sambal Tumis are a true delight. I relished the grilled udang, succulent prawns seasoned with butter, garlic, and a dash of spice, served alongside homemade garlic mayo. The Cucur Udang, crispy prawn fritters with bean sprouts, onion, Chinese chives, and chili, were a savory delight, perfectly complemented by their spicy chili sauce.
n
For a satisfying main course, I highly recommend the chicken sate. Skewered chicken thigh pieces marinated in galangal, lemongrass, and a medley of spices, served with a savory homemade peanut sauce. And if you’re a fan of curry, the Butter Kari Ayam is a must-try. The deep-fried battered chicken pieces smothered in a creamy, buttery sauce infused with curry leaves and Malaysian curry powder are simply divine.
n
To complete your culinary journey, indulge in the Char Key Teow, a popular hawker dish featuring stir-fried flat rice noodles in a flavorful mix of soy sauce, chili, egg, Chinese chives, fried tofu, and bean sprouts. Garnished with fresh coriander, chili, and a squeeze of lime, it’s a symphony of flavors that will leave you wanting more.
n
Every dish at Sambal Tumis exudes the warmth and authenticity of homemade food. The commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients is evident in every bite. Freshness and quality are paramount, and the result is an exquisite dining experience that transports you to the streets of Malaysia.
n
Sambal Tumis is a hidden gem in Bournemouth, where the love for Malaysian cuisine is brought to life. Whether you’re a fan of bold flavors, hearty dishes, or seeking a taste of authentic Malaysian street food, this restaurant will not disappoint. The care, passion, and dedication of the Priors shine through in every aspect, making Sambal Tumis a must-visit for anyone craving a genuine taste of Malaysia.
