From Kolkata to Soho: A Tribute to Indo-Chinese Cuisine

TANGRA opens in Soho, blending Indo-Chinese flavours with creative flair. Expect bold dishes, vibrant cocktails, and retro-inspired interiors in a buzzing space capturing the joyful energy of Mumbai and Soho.

London dining just got spicier. On 3rd November 2025, Soho welcomes an electrifying new addition to its restaurant scene: TANGRA, a bold Indo-Chinese restaurant paying homage to the fiery flavours and cultural fusion that defines this unique cuisine. At the helm is Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant, whose team draws inspiration from India, Tibet, Nepal, and the diverse diaspora that has shaped and elevated this vibrant culinary style.

A Fusion Born in Kolkata, Perfected in Soho
Named after Tangra, the historic neighbourhood in Kolkata renowned as the birthplace of Indo-Chinese cuisine, TANGRA’s menu is a celebration of cultural crossover. This singular cuisine emerged from Kolkata’s Hakka Chinese community, who infused their traditional cooking with the bold spices and ingredients of India. Chef Sawant and his team take this legacy and reimagine it for a modern Soho audience, layering authentic traditions with creative innovation.

Expect dishes that are fiery, soulful, and unapologetically bold. Highlights include the Himawan Sadeko Chick’n, TANGRA Special Combination Rice, and favourites like Manchurian Kofta or Hakka Noodles, the ultimate Indo-Chinese comfort food. Playful inventions such as the Hakko – a Hakka-inspired taco made with paratha – add a modern twist, alongside mouthwatering small plates like Chilli Cheese Quesadilla, Chinese Bhel, and the indulgent Bazaar MOMO stuffed with sweetcorn and cheddar cheese. Every sauce is made from scratch, capturing the intense heat, smokiness, and complexity that makes Indo-Chinese food irresistible.

Chef Nikesh Sawant captures the heart of the cuisine, explaining, “For me, Indo-Chinese food is pure nostalgia – it’s the taste of Bombay nights, post-school snacks, or late-night noodles with friends. TANGRA is fiery, joyful, and unapologetic.”

Cocktails to Match the Spice
The drinks at TANGRA are just as bold, designed to complement the energetic flavours of the menu. Highlights include the exotic Lychee Baijiu Sling, bursting with lychee and pandan, the tropical Piña Kolkata, spiced with amla and ginger, and the indulgent Rasgulla Espresso Martini. For those who prefer alcohol-free options, the inventive No and Lo Menu shines with refreshing mocktails like the tangy jal jeera and the delightful No’Rita 0% Margarita, made with kala khatta for a sweet, tangy hit.

Mumbai Meets Soho
Located at 17 Frith Street, just steps from Ronnie Scott’s and Bar Italia, TANGRA is as vibrant and eclectic as its surroundings. The interiors channel Mumbai’s riotous energy, blending Indian mythology with retrofuturist design. Timeless elements like patterned floors, retro laminates, graphic overlays, and glowing signage create a space that is both nostalgic and strikingly modern. Whether it’s a lively lunch, a late-night feast, or cocktails that stretch into the early hours, TANGRA promises to bring the buzz of its Indo-Chinese roots to the heart of Soho.

Open seven days a week, TANGRA serves lunch and dinner, with late-night service until 1:30 am from Thursday to Saturday.

TANGRA opens Monday, 3rd November 2025. Mark your calendars for a taste of Indo-Chinese like no other.
