There is history here, too. Toppers first opened in 1920, giving the restaurant more than a century of local heritage. The current owner, Mahmut Alti, is only the fourth owner in its long history, having taken over the business around a year ago. His philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: when you inherit a restaurant that has survived for more than 100 years, you have a responsibility to maintain its standards.

I ordered a large fish and chips with gravy, and the first impression was exactly what you want from the dish: a generously sized piece of fish wrapped in a crisp, deeply golden batter, accompanied by a substantial portion of chips. The batter had that satisfying combination of crunch and lightness, while the fish beneath remained the star rather than being overwhelmed by its coating. The gravy added another comforting, distinctly British dimension to the plate.
I had also mentioned that I have an allergy relating to sausage, and the staff took the question seriously, explaining that the sausage was not fried in the same fryer as the fish. That willingness to listen and respond clearly was appreciated.

Then came a little improvisation. I asked for a burger bun so I could turn part of my fish into my own fish burger. They happily provided one, and suddenly one meal became two experiences. Mahmut has lived in Nuneaton for 26 years and previously ran a takeaway, so he understands both the business and the community around it. That local knowledge matters. Toppers does not feel like a restaurant attempting to reinvent fish and chips.
