COVENTRY – Nestled in the heart of Coventry, Metropolis Restaurant is a hidden culinary gem that promises a dining experience like no other. My recent visit, where I sampled the new fine dining menu planned for the new year, left me thoroughly impressed.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was struck by its sleek and modern ambiance. The contemporary decor, soft lighting, and tasteful use of urban design elements create an inviting atmosphere. Work by local artists is displayed within the restaurant, adding further to the unique nature of the premises. The restaurant strikes a perfect balance between sophistication and comfort, making it an ideal setting for a romantic dinner, a special celebration or a midweek meal with friends.

The current menu at Metropolis Restaurant offers a diverse range of dishes, from classic crowd-pleasers and fusion creations to European options that reflect the cosmopolitan nature of Coventry. The talented head chef, Stuart Tomes, is in the process of creating a sophisticated fine-dining menu which showcases the very best fresh produce, innovative combinations of ingredients and complex cooking.  Metropolis Restaurant won the 2023 Taste of Coventry Award in which their culinary efforts were recognised and this shows just how much potential the restaurant has. Metropolis is a PET-Xi Training Venue which gives many young people the opportunity to learn new skills and aims to change lives through education and employment. Stuart Tomes explained that there are currently three trainee chefs in the kitchen, with great promise, as the restaurant was smoothly managed and steadily busy on a Saturday night.

The food itself had many classical elements combined with new and exciting takes on combinations centred around seasonal ingredients. The fresh smoked salmon was always going to be a winner and the kohl grabe baked three ways was a very pleasant surprise, packed with flavour. All of the dishes were beautifully balanced and presented in a way which really demonstrated the thought and technical skill that goes into each dish. The chef’s passion for food and culinary combinations really shone through. The pork loin and pan-seared hake were exceptionally cooked and served with seasonal veg.

The ambition to create innovative vegetarian and vegan dishes was impressive. Designed for 4 people to share, the baked blue pumpkin filled with a rich, smoky bean stew was delicious and something really exceptional. To finish, there are a good range of desserts including delicious macaroons, again demonstrating the technical skill of the kitchen.

The staff were friendly and attentive. They were knowledgeable about the food and drink on offer. As well as a well-stocked bar, there is an extensive cocktail list.

Metropolis Restaurant combines exquisite cuisine, inviting ambiance, and exceptional service. Whether you’re looking for a dinner for two, a special occasion, or just a meal out, this restaurant is sure to impress. It’s a testament to Coventry’s growing culinary scene and a place to return to time and time again.
